Moldoveanu Peak — Romania's Highest
A demanding two-day round trip from the Sâmbăta Valley near Victoria to Vârful Moldoveanu (2,544 m), Romania's highest peak, in the Făgăraș Mountains. The route climbs past Mănăstirea Brâncoveanu to Cabana Valea Sâmbetei, then follows the exposed main ridge over Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei and Portița Viștei to Vârful Viștea Mare, finishing with a short, chain-assisted scramble across Spintecătura Viștei to the summit and sweeping views over the whole Făgăraș crest.
Why this grade: Rated hard for its combination of scale, altitude, and technical exposure: at roughly 32 km round trip with about 2,050 m of cumulative climbing, this is one of the longest and most strenuous marked hikes in the Făgăraș, and the entire ridge from Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei to the summit stays above 2,100 m with no tree cover, little reliable water, and long stretches of loose rock. The final approach across Spintecătura Viștei, between Vârful Viștea Mare and Vârful Moldoveanu, is a narrow, exposed scramble that leans on fixed chains at its steepest step, and Salvamont has recorded fatal falls in this section, so the route demands sure footing, a head for exposure, and genuine mountain experience, not just fitness. Most hikers split it over two days with an overnight at Cabana Valea Sâmbetei, since a single-push round trip means 15 to 17 hours of continuous effort at altitude.

Mălăiești Valley to Omu
A long, remote ascent up the glacial Mălăiești valley on the north flank of the Bucegi massif, from the forest roads above Râșnov past Cabana Mălăiești and through the rock couloir of Hornul Mare al Mălăieștilor to Curmătura Hornurilor and the summit of Vârful Omu (2,514 m), the highest point in the Bucegi Mountains. The glacial cirque below Padina Crucii and Bucșoiu, with the valley falling away north toward Râșnov, makes this one of the most dramatic and least crowded approaches to Omu.
Why this grade: Rated hard for the combination of distance, sustained elevation gain, and technical exposure: the roughly 19 km round trip climbs about 1,700 m from the Râșnov-side trailhead to the summit, most of it on remote, lightly trafficked trail with no hut before Cabana Mălăiești and no easy escape beyond it. The crux is Hornul Mare al Mălăieștilor, a steep, loose rock-and-scree couloir roughly 100 m high that requires careful hands-on scrambling and carries a real risk of rockfall, and which can hold snow, ice, or cornices at its exit well into early summer. Above the couloir the open ridge between Curmătura Hornurilor and the summit offers no shelter from sudden fog, wind, or lightning, and the whole outing typically takes 10-12 hours car to car, which is why most parties split it over two days with an overnight at Cabana Mălăiești rather than attempt it in a single push.

Omu Peak via the Bucegi Plateau
A high-level traverse of the Bucegi plateau from the Babele cable-car station to Vârful Omu (2,505 m), the highest point in the Bucegi Mountains and home to the highest mountain hut in the Carpathians. The route crosses open alpine tundra past the Sphinx and the narrow limestone balcony of Cerdacul Obârșiei, perched on the plateau's western rim above the Ialomița headwaters, before a final climb to the summit's 360-degree panorama across the whole massif.
Why this grade: Rated moderate rather than easy, less for its roughly 500 m of cumulative climbing than for how exposed it is: the entire 11 km round trip sits above 2,100 m on treeless, wind-scoured plateau with no forest cover, no reliable water, and effectively no escape route once past the Sphinx. The narrow limestone balcony at Cerdacul Obârșiei has genuine cliff-edge exposure, weather on the Bucegi tableland can turn from clear to zero-visibility fog or a lightning-risk squall within minutes even in July, and snow can linger into early summer, so these objective hazards push what would otherwise be an easy day on the elevation profile alone up to a moderate rating.

Bâlea Lake to Capra Lake
A short, steep alpine walk on the Transfăgărășan's high ridge, climbing from Bâlea Lake over the 2,315 m Șaua Caprei pass to the glacial waters of Lacul Capra and back. Loose rock and a sharp early ascent make it feel bigger than its distance, but the payoff is two of the Făgăraș Mountains' best-known lakes seen from a single high pass in an easy half-day out.
Why this grade: At under 4 km round trip the distance is short, but nearly all of the roughly 370 m of cumulative elevation change is packed into the first and last kilometer, climbing steep, loose scree and rock steps to the 2,315 m Șaua Caprei pass. The trail runs close to steep drop-offs into the Bâlea and Capra valleys near the saddle, the trailhead already sits above 2,000 m, and the open pass is exposed to fast-changing mountain weather. Together these push an otherwise brief walk out of 'easy' into solid 'moderate' territory, even though no scrambling, ropes, or technical route-finding are required.

Caraiman Cross Loop via Jepii Mici (Up) and Jepii Mari (Down)
A steep, technical loop from Bușteni: up the Valea Jepii Mici gully to the 39-metre steel Heroes' Cross on Caraiman, summit elevation 2,291 m, standing about 1,400 m above Bușteni, then down through the Jepii Mari valley. Fixed chains help hikers past a waterfall and a lingering snow gully on the ascent, and a final exposed traverse along Brâna Mare a Caraimanului reaches the cross before the long, knee-jarring Jepii Mari descent back to town.
Why this grade: Rated hard for its combination of sustained steepness, technical terrain, and real exposure rather than sheer distance: the round trip covers 16 km but packs roughly 1,480 m of cumulative climbing into a narrow gully secured by numerous fixed chains on wet rock and scree, and the final approach to the cross crosses Brâna Mare a Caraimanului, a genuinely exposed cliff-edge ledge with unprotected drops. A lingering snow gully near the top, frequent afternoon fog and thunderstorms above 2,000 m, and the demand for careful downclimbing on the return all push this well beyond a moderate rating.

Babele and the Sphinx Plateau Walk
A short, near-flat walk across the Bucegi plateau from the top of the Bușteni cable car to the wind-carved Babele rock towers and on to the Sphinx, Romania's famous stone profile at 2,216 m. Reached entirely by cable car, it needs no technical skill, just sturdy shoes and respect for fast-changing mountain weather, and rewards walkers with sheer drop-off views over the Prahova Valley.
Why this grade: Round trip distance is only about 3.4 km with roughly 90 m of undulating elevation change, almost all of it delivered by the cable car rather than on foot. The plateau paths are wide, well-marked and free of scrambling or technical terrain, though the unfenced rim near the Sphinx and sudden weather shifts call for sensible footwear and caution rather than mountaineering skill.

Piatra Arsă Southern Plateau
A moderate out-and-back walk across the southern rim of the Bucegi plateau, starting from the top of the Sinaia cable car at Cota 2000. The route climbs a short, steep pitch onto Vârful Furnica, rolls north past the Piatra Arsă sports complex, and finishes at the broad summit of Piatra Arsă (2,044 m), with open views down toward the Prahova Valley. No technical climbing is needed, but the plateau's altitude and fast-changing weather call for proper footwear and a weather eye.
Why this grade: At about 6.4 km round trip with roughly 320 m of cumulative elevation change, the walk is longer and more undulating than a flat plateau stroll, including one distinctly steep pitch onto Vârful Furnica right after leaving the cable car that can be slick on wet rock or icy snow. The rest of the route is easy, gently rolling grassland and gravel with no scrambling, but sustained walking above 1,900-2,100 m, unfenced meadow edges near the Piatra Arsă complex, and fast-changing mountain weather put it a notch above an easy walk for hikers without mountain experience.

Piatra Craiului Northern Crest (La Lanțuri)
A hard, chain-assisted scramble from Cabana Curmătura up the exposed 'La Lanțuri' gully onto Piatra Craiului's narrow northern crest, traversing the airy ridgeline over Vârful Turnu to a turnaround at Vârful Padina Popii before retracing the same line back down. Roughly 7.6 km round trip with 620 m of cumulative gain, it demands a head for heights and real scrambling technique, not just fitness.
Why this grade: Rated hard for its technical terrain rather than raw distance: about 7.6 km round trip and 620 m of cumulative gain concentrated in a short, steep chain-secured gully, followed by sustained hand-and-foot scrambling along a narrow, exposed ridge crest with a near-vertical limestone drop into the Dâmbovița valley on the western flank and a steep, more open pastoral slope into the Bârsa depression on the east. There is no bail-out partway along the crest, loose limestone adds rockfall risk, and route-finding in cloud or rain is genuinely dangerous, all of which pushes this well beyond what a fit hiker's normal pace would suggest.

Ciucaș Peak from Muntele Roșu
A full mountain day from Cabana Muntele Roșu, on the southern edge of the Ciucaș massif, up the forested Valea Berii and steep switchbacks to Cabana Vf. Ciucaș, then a short, rocky scramble through the wind-carved Babele la Sfat towers to the 1,954 m summit of Vârful Ciucaș, the range's highest point. Round trip covers about 15 km and 950 m of climbing, rated moderate rather than hard because the steep, occasionally rocky terrain needs no ropes or chains.
Why this grade: At roughly 15 km round trip with about 950 m of cumulative climbing, most of it on steep forest-road switchbacks followed by a short but genuinely rocky scramble near the summit, this is a full mountain day rather than a short walk, and it demands solid fitness and sturdy boots. It stops short of hard because the whole route stays on a continuously waymarked trail with no chains, ladders, or seriously exposed ledges: Romanian trail guides consistently grade the Muntele Roșu-Vârful Ciucaș climb as medium/moderate, with the real challenges being stamina, the steep switchback grade, and route-finding in fog near the treeless upper slopes rather than technical terrain.

Gropșoarele–Zăganu Ridge
A demanding out-and-back from Cabana Muntele Roșu over the two highest points of the Gropșoarele–Zăganu ridge: Vârful Gropșoarele (1,883 m) and Vârful Zăganu (1,817 m). The trail climbs through spruce forest onto the open crest and crosses the chain-protected rock towers of Colții Zăganului before retracing the same route back down. The reward is a jagged, wind-scoured skyline locals call a miniature Piatra Craiului, with Cheia village far below and Ciucaș Peak's spires on the horizon.
Why this grade: Rated hard not for sheer distance (about 11.8 km round trip) but for the terrain: roughly 950 m of cumulative climbing on an undulating ridge, a genuinely exposed rock-tower passage at Colții Zăganului that requires using an old fixed chain, loose scree on the steeper pitches, and fast-changing mountain weather with little shelter once past the tree line. Waymarking thins out around the rock towers, making route-finding tricky in fog, and there is no water source above the trailhead, which adds real seriousness to what would otherwise be a moderate-elevation objective.

Tigăile Mari Rock Towers
A ridge walk in the Ciucaș Mountains from Bratocea Pass on DN1A to Tigăile Mari, a kilometre-long crest of wind- and rain-sculpted conglomerate towers rising up to 100 metres above the alpine grass. The red-band trail climbs past the rock spurs of Colții Bratocei and over Bratocea din Jos and Vârful Bratocea before reaching the towers, where the ridge falls away south into the forested Chirușca valley toward Cheia. Out and back from the pass, with no water sources en route.
Why this grade: Rated moderate: the 12 km round trip and roughly 640 m of cumulative climbing are within reach of a fit hiker in sturdy boots, and the red-band trail is continuously waymarked with no chains, ladders, or exposed ledges of the kind found on Bucegi's cliff balconies. It is more than an 'easy' outing because the route above Colții Bratocei is entirely treeless and wind-exposed, the final approach to Tigăile Mari crosses loose scree and bare conglomerate slabs that turn slick when wet, mountain weather on the open ridge can shift quickly, and there is no water source between the pass and the towers.

Bâlea Waterfall Trail
A short, steep out-and-back walk from the cable car base station on the Transfăgărășan (DN7C) up through spruce forest to the foot of Bâlea Waterfall, a 60-metre stepped cascade fed by Bâlea Lake high in the Făgăraș glacial cirque above. At about 3 km round trip with roughly 350 m of climbing on a red-dot marked path, it needs no technical skill, just sturdy shoes, and ends at a spray-misted viewing terrace close beneath the falls.
Why this grade: At only 3 km round trip with roughly 350 m of elevation gain concentrated in the second half, the walk stays within easy grading: there is no exposure, scrambling, or route-finding, and the destination viewing terrace is reached on a single, well-trodden red-dot path starting right at the cable car station. The final switchbacks are narrow and strewn with large, often wet boulders, which calls for sturdy footwear and a bit more care than a flat stroll, but nothing beyond typical easy-trail terrain.

Curmătura Saddle from Zărnești
A forested climb on Piatra Craiului's eastern flank from the Fântâna lui Botorog spring outside Zărnești to Cabana Curmătura at 1,470 m. Steady yellow-band switchbacks through beech forest reach the open shoulder of Poiana Zănoaga before a final push to the hut, which sits directly under the massif's towering limestone wall. Moderate distance and elevation gain make it a solid half-day out-and-back for hikers with basic fitness.
Why this grade: Round trip covers just under 9 km with about 650 m of steady elevation gain, most of it packed into the roughly 2 km of switchbacks between the trailhead and Poiana Zănoaga on a well-marked but rooty, sometimes slippery forest trail. There is no scrambling or exposure to falls, but the sustained, unbroken climb, the lack of a dependable primary water source before the hut, and nearly 650 m of total ascent put this solidly in moderate territory rather than easy.

Cabana Diham Forest Loop
A mostly forested loop from Bușteni up to the timber Cabana Diham hut and back, climbing gently through beech and fir forest to the Șaua Baiului saddle before returning by a different, higher path past Pichetul Roșu and Cabana Poiana Izvoarelor. About 19 km and roughly 600 m of gentle, evenly graded climbing with no scrambling or exposure, but the full-day distance and duration make it a moderate outing best suited to fit, well-prepared hikers, plus two mountain huts along the way for rest.
Why this grade: At about 18.9 km and roughly 6 hours 40 minutes, this is a full-day outing, which puts it in the moderate band on length and duration alone even though the terrain itself is gentle. The entire route follows wide, well-marked forest roads and paths on a steady grade, roughly 600 m of total climbing spread across the whole distance, well under 35 m of gain per kilometre. There is no scrambling, no exposed ridge walking and no technical terrain anywhere on the loop; the only genuinely steep stretch is the short 'panta prostului' switchback section above Gura Diham, and even that is a maintained dirt path. Two mountain huts, Gura Diham and Diham, sit directly on the route for rest, water and shelter, and the trail stays inside the forest for almost its entire length, so weather exposure is far lower than on routes onto the open Bucegi plateau, but the sheer distance means it demands a fit, well-prepared hiker with an early start.

Mount Tâmpa above Brașov
A short, steep climb straight out of Brașov's old town, up the roughly 13 switchbacks of the wooded Drumul Serpentinelor to the summit of Tâmpa at 960 m, part of the Postăvarul massif. No car or highway drive is needed, only sturdy shoes, since the trailhead sits a few minutes' walk from Piața Sfatului. The payoff at the top is the classic Brașov postcard view: the old town's red rooftops laid out directly below the summit terrace to the north, with the massif rising behind to the south.
Why this grade: The round trip covers only about 6 km, but the roughly 380 m of cumulative climbing on the way up is concentrated into a continuous run of roughly 13 tight switchbacks and worn stone steps with no flat recovery sections, on a slope that is loose gravel or slick after rain. There is no exposure or scrambling and the trail is well marked throughout, but the sustained, steady gradient right from the old town streets is enough to push a fit walker's heart rate and makes this a solid step up from a flat city walk, landing it in moderate rather than easy territory.

Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor Gorge
An easy, near-level walk from the Fântâna lui Botorog trailhead into Prăpăstiile Zărneștilor, the narrow limestone gorge cut by the Râul Mare on the eastern flank of Piatra Craiului. A wide gravel track follows the streambed between sheer walls that close in and rise up to 200 m overhead, passing cave openings and springs before an easy turnaround short of the steep climb to Cabana Curmătura. Family-friendly; the round trip takes about two and a half hours.
Why this grade: The round trip covers about 6 km with roughly 150 m of gentle elevation gain on a wide, well-maintained gravel track that follows the valley floor the entire way; there is no scrambling, exposure, or route-finding required. The trail crosses the Râul Mare on stepping stones several times, which can be slippery when wet, and the tall, close limestone walls carry a small rockfall risk after rain or freeze-thaw, but the terrain itself is easy enough for families and casual walkers of any fitness level.
