Overview
The classic northern approach to Romania's highest summit begins at Complex Turistic Sâmbăta, beside the white walls of Mănăstirea Brâncoveanu near Victoria, and follows a forestry track and marked trail south along the Sâmbăta valley through spruce forest and, higher up, juniper and dwarf pine, to Cabana Valea Sâmbetei at 1,400 m, the usual overnight base. From the hut a steep, switchbacking climb gains the main Făgăraș ridge at Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei (2,188 m), where the trail marking changes to a red stripe and turns west onto the high crest, undulating over rocky ground to the saddle at Portița Viștei (2,310 m). A short, rugged pull leads to Vârful Viștea Mare (2,527 m), Romania's third-highest peak, from which a narrow, airy connecting ridge, Spintecătura Viștei, equipped with fixed chains on its steepest step, drops into a shallow col and climbs one final time to Vârful Moldoveanu at 2,544 m. From this last stretch of ridge the ground falls away south into the deep glacial cirque of Valea Rea, where the triangular glint of Iezerul Moldoveanului (Iezerul Triunghiular) sits at 2,159 m directly beneath the Viștea Mare-Moldoveanu wall, while to the west the crest continues toward Negoiu, Romania's second-highest peak, and to the north the forested Sâmbăta valley recedes toward the Transylvanian plain. This is a serious high-mountain undertaking: the entire ridge from Fereastra Mare onward sits above 2,100 m with no shelter, little reliable water, and a genuinely technical, chain-assisted scramble at the very top, so most parties split the route over two days with a night at Cabana Valea Sâmbetei rather than attempt the full round trip in a single push.

Access, season, and cautions
Access
From Brașov, take DN1 southwest toward Făgăraș and continue past Sâmbăta de Jos (about 1 km west of Voila on DN1) to Victoria, roughly 85-90 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes in total. From Sâmbăta de Jos or Victoria, a modernised side road runs about 15 km through Sâmbăta de Sus to Complex Turistic Sâmbăta beside Mănăstirea Brâncoveanu, where there is free parking and the marked trailhead for Route 15, signed Viștea Mare-Moldoveanu. There is no cable car, chairlift, or shuttle anywhere on this route; every metre of the roughly 1,870 m net elevation gain from trailhead to summit is on foot.
No park entrance ticket or climbing permit is required; unlike Bucegi or Piatra Craiului, this part of the Făgăraș is not inside a fee-charging natural park, though the high ridge lies within a protected Natura 2000 site where camping is limited to the ground around the huts and refuges. It is strongly advised, and effectively expected by Salvamont Brașov and Salvamont Argeș, that hikers log their planned route and expected return time before setting out, given the remoteness and the technical Spintecătura Viștei section.
Season: The most reliable window is mid-July through mid-September, when snow has generally cleared from the ridge and the Spintecătura Viștei scramble is dry; Salvamont considers August and September the optimal months. Snow can linger in shaded gullies near Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei into late June, and sudden afternoon storms with lightning are common on the exposed crest even in high summer, so an early start and a firm turnaround time matter. From October through May the ridge becomes a full winter mountaineering objective with avalanche risk, ice, and whiteout conditions well beyond the scope of a marked-trail hike.
Cautions
- A narrow, exposed scramble across Spintecătura Viștei between Vârful Viștea Mare and Vârful Moldoveanu, equipped with fixed chains on its steepest step; Salvamont has recorded fatal falls here, and it is considerably more dangerous in wet or windy conditions.
- The entire ridge from Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei to the summit sits above 2,100 m with no tree cover; fog, high wind, and lightning can develop within minutes with no shelter until back at Cabana Valea Sâmbetei.
- Snow and ice can linger in shaded sections into late June, and a summer snow squall above 2,100 m is possible even in July and August.
- Little reliable water on the high ridge beyond a few seasonal springs; carry all the water needed for the ridge section between the cabana and the summit.
- Air temperature can drop by roughly 10°C between the trailhead and the summit, and the round trip is long enough that under-prepared parties can still be on exposed terrain after dark.

- Fereastra Mare a Sâmbetei (2,188 m) — The saddle where the trail gains the main Făgăraș ridge and the marking changes to a red stripe; treeless and exposed from this point on.
- Portița Viștei (2,310 m) — Saddle on the main crest near the small Refugiul Viștea Mare bivouac shelter, reached after an undulating ridge traverse from Fereastra Mare.
- Vârful Viștea Mare (2,527 m) — Romania's third-highest peak; the connecting ridge to Moldoveanu, Spintecătura Viștei, begins its narrow, chain-assisted section just beyond the summit.
- Summit: Vârful Moldoveanu (2,544 m) — Romania's highest point, marked by a small metal cross and survey marker; the glacial cirque of Valea Rea and Iezerul Moldoveanului drop away to the south.
